Tasmania crime: Brazen thieves caught on video using angle grinder at Dover property

A Dover homeowner has been left “on edge” after thieves repeatedly targeted his property. He’s released footage of one brazen incident in the hopes he can identify the alleged offenders. WATCH THE VIDEO.

A trio of masked men have attempted to break into a shipping container on a Dover property using an angle grinder shown in shocking video obtained by the Mercury.

Homeowner Sean has released the footage taken earlier this year to try and track down the men in the video, who have not yet been identified.

The events captured are not the first of its kind, with Sean stating another trio of men, in what he alleges is the same car as the one captured, broke into his shipping containers earlier last year.

“People broke in and stole heaps of gear – tools mainly,” Sean said.

“I obviously upgraded my security because if that, which includes the camera that filmed the footage, but people have come back again.”

Sean said that the police haven’t had any success in tracking down the men from either incident, but says as someone with a police background, he understands the situation.

“I was a policeman for 30 years in Western Australia, so I understand how police typically respond to theft and burglaries,” he said.

“Police have had no luck in finding them and really, we don’t have enough cops down in the Huon to chase people, so you have to look after yourself.”

The alleged brazen incidents have caused Sean to feel more “on edge” about a potential return of thieves, with his neighbours also ramping up security at their properties.

“It’s sad that it’s becoming a bigger issue down here,” he said.

“People now feel the need to double and triple-check they have locked up their stuff and won’t leave anything lying around their properties anymore – we used to be a sleepy, country town.”

Tasmania Police have said they are continuing to investigate the March incident, with the vehicle in the video confirmed as stolen.

“Police are investigating an incident in Dover on March 6, 2023 where two men attempted to gain entry into a shipping container,” a Tasmania Police spokeswoman said.

“The men had driven to the container on the Huon Highway in a stolen vehicle.

“A 28-year-old man from Merton was charged in relation to the stolen vehicle. This matter remains before the court.”

Anyone with information in relation to the attempted burglary of the shipping container is asked to contact police on 131 444, quoting reference number OR707501.
