A FAVOURITE Tasmanian beer label is proving hard to find interstate much to the disappointment of mainland Tasmanian beer lovers.

Cascade beer lover Paddy Hodgman said he had spent the bulk of his adult life enjoying the label’s many varieties including pale ale and lager.

But since moving to the ACT, the brother of former Tasmanian politician Michael Hodgman said he had noticed Cascade products “progressively disappearing” from mainland outlets.

“When I called CUB [Cascade’s parent company] to seek information as to where on the mainland I could purchase their Tasmanian product, I was advised that it is not available outside Tasmania,” he said.

“On asking why, I was told ‘various factors’ and, on pressing the matter, that “some retailers might not want to carry it” That’s hardly the case when I’m aware of at least three outlets in my area who have complained that they can’t get it but would carry it if they could.

“So if this beer isn’t selling, I think that’s because CUB is not providing it to retailers.

“So, why is CUB seemingly burying this quality Tasmanian product?

“Is it because it’s better than some of their other products and the competition hurts, or is it because, despite their own range of other ‘boutique’ products, they are happy to let economies of scale kill this fine Tasmanian product.”

A CUB spokesman said Cascade was one of the best beers in Australia – whether you’re in Tasmania or on the mainland and said it was available outside Tasmania.

“Cascade Light is widely stocked on the mainland. Other varieties, including Stout, are also available but not in big numbers.

“We sell Cascade varieties on the mainland to different independent wholesalers, who supply independent bottle shops.

“But Cascade lovers on the mainland can also purchase different varieties online, including through our retailer boozebud.com.”
