Work begins on $90 million fix for notorious Beverly dogleg intersection in Adelaide’s west

The project will tackle an intersection that has seen dozens of crashes in Adelaide’s west. See the plans.

Grange Rd, Holbrooks Rd and East Ave intersection upgrade

Construction is underway on an upgrade of the “frustrating” Beverley intersection between Grange Rd, Holbrooks Rd and East Ave, after the project was first announced in May of last year.

The $90 million project aims to remove the western suburbs dogleg intersection, which was the site of 31 crashes between 2019 and 2023.

The upgrade will see two through lanes on each approach, as well as eight turning lanes.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said the upgrade is “something western suburbs commuters have long been hoping for”.

“The current configuration along Grange road at Beverley has frustrated motorists for years,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

“They can’t wait to see the existing “dogleg” intersection removed.”

The project will ease congestion on the intersection, which in its current configuration carries nearly 50,000 vehicles per day.

“Constructing a new four-way intersection will relieve congestion, resulting in less time waiting at the traffic lights and improved safety and connectivity,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

Additional upgrades of the site will include new traffic lights, line markings and pedestrian crossings.

Dedicated bicycle lanes will also be installed from every direction, a move that Mr Koutsantonis said will improve “pedestrian and cyclist safety”, along with a bus bay on Holbrooks Rd.

The state government says the majority of road works will be undertaken at night between 7pm and 6am, Monday to Thursday with occasional closures on Holbrooks Road and East Avenue.
Motorists have been advised to expect speed restrictions and traffic controllers for the duration of the project, which is due to be completed late this year.

The upgrades come following extensive community consultations, which also led to the installation of a new pedestrian crossing on Grange Rd between Hallett Blvd and Coombe Rd.

The project is part of an $850 million suite of changes to intersections near the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project, while the crossing is jointly funded by the federal and state governments as part of the National Road Safety Program.
