Wildlife volunteers are searching for a pelican with horrific injuries after it was discovered with an arrow shot through its head near the Coorong over the weekend.
Volunteers from the Wildlife Welfare Organisation SA Inc (WWO), travelled to Meningie in the state’s southeast on Sunday, after locals reported a pelican with an arrow through its head.
In a Facebook post the WWO said they had reported the incident to police, and encouraged locals to “keep an eye out”, as the WWO did not have the resources to return for a second search.
“WWO are completely overwhelmed at the moment as to what is happening to our beloved pelicans,” the post read.
“Bridgette and Scott (volunteers) travelled to Meningie on Sunday to search for a pelican with the most hideous of injuries.
“It was still swimming and perching at this stage. Unfortunately, after two hours of searching, the bird could not be located. WWO are still on alert in case it is spotted again.
“Our resources are stretched to the limit, as most of the time it’s a whole day round trip for our rescue teams.
“Our hearts break for all of these poor birds, and these are only the ones that get reported.”
The WWO said they had reported the incident to police.
