A violent KFC robbery in Mawson Lakes escalated into a five-hour siege following a police standoff at Parafield Gardens yesterday
On Tuesday afternoon, a 44-year-old entered the fast food-restaurant on Salisbury Highway and allegedly smashed the counter with a metal tyre lever, threatening staff and demanding for food at 3.30pm.
After stealing food items, he drove off in a Hyundai sedan along Elder Smith Drive.
No one was injured in the incident.
Following investigations, police tracked the man back to a Parafield Gardens address where they said he refused to exit the property.
Several neighbours detailed the scenes as Star Group officers swarmed the neighbourhood.
Neighbour Kay Boo told 9News that she was told to “stay inside and lock her doors”.
“Everyone went crazy, I’ve seen the cops everywhere,” she said.
Another neighbour Roger Sallis said he thought it was “really serious stuff” when two officers approached him, one holding a shield and the other holding a rifle.
After a five-hour standoff and negotiations by the police, he was finally arrested without further incident just before midnight.
Once the 44-year-old man was arrested, police conducted a search of his home and uncovered several knives.
He has been charged with assault, carry offensive weapon and theft and further weapons offences
The man did not apply for bail and faced court today.
