MONDAY, MAY 2

On Monday evening, SA Health announced new variants of Omicron had been detected in this state.

SA Health said the latest whole genome sequencing results from positive PCR samples in South Australia have found two of the more recently described Omicron variants of COVID-19 – one case of BA. 4 and one case of BA. 5, both from international travellers.

Genome sequencing can take some days to complete.

SA Health said while this is the first time BA. 4 and BA. 5 have been detected in SA, with international borders now open, it is not unexpected to see new variants in our state and across Australia.

The new Omicron variants have also recently been detected interstate.

Earlier, it was announced that there had been 3143 new cases of Covid-10 reported in SA on Monday, with 24,803 active cases.

SA Health confirmed three people had died – two women in their 70s and a woman in her 80s.

There are 257 people with Covid in hospital, including 15 people in ICU, with two people requiring a ventilator. Of those hospitalised, 195 people are fully vaccinated, 56 people are either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, and six have an unknown vaccination status.

Meanwhile, Liberal MP James Stevens has tested positive to Covid, slowing down his campaign to retain his federal seat of Sturt.

Mr Stevens confirmed to The Advertiser he has been plunged into isolation for seven days after testing positive last Friday.

The race for his blue-ribbon, eastern suburbs seat intensified following the Liberals’ state election bloodbath in March.

Former premier Steven Marshall suffered a damaging swing to Labor in Dunstan, suggesting a growing Labor supporter base in the area.

Mr Stevens is attempting to defend his 6.9 per cent margin against Labor’s Sonja Baram and his Covid diagnosis is a major setback for him.

“It’s obviously a setback to my campaigning but we’ve all had disruptions over the past two years and I will be substituting door knocking with telephone calls over the next few days,” Mr Stevens said.

“My symptoms have been medium over the last few days and hope I’m on the other side of it very soon.”

On Monday, Mr Stevens posted a campaign video on his Facebook page, saying: “Let’s keep delivering for Sturt”.

His close ally, Schubert MP Ashton Hurn, also tested positive to Covid.

State Liberal leader David Speirs and deputy John Gardner caught the virus last week.

There are currently 24,792 active cases in South Australia – SA Health said that total has been readjusted due to a reconfiguration of the data.
