Two flee home in Kensington Park, Adelaide after electric blanket sparks fire

An elderly couple had to flee a burning Kensington Park home as firefighters arrived to find thick smoke and flames billowing from the rear and roof of the property.

A couple aged in their 80s were forced to flee a burning home on Monday night as firefighters arrived to find thick smoke and flames.

SA Metropolitan Fire Service crews were called to a structure fire on Corinda St at Kensington Park just after 11.30pm.

An MFS spokesperson said firefighters arrived to see heavy smoke and flames leaping from the rear and roof of the property.

Six appliances and a one command car went to the scene, while 25 firefighters – some wearing breathing apparatus – worked to extinguish the fire.

Fire investigators believe the blaze was started by an electric blanket, causing about $300,000 damage.

It comes after a young Barossa family was forced to start from scratch after a freak electrical fire tore through their home last week, sparking above their 10-year-old daughter’s bed, not long after she’d been sound asleep inside.

The family is now living in emergency accommodation while their insurer sorts out longer-term arrangements.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a house fire in Adelaide’s north on Tuesday morning.

Police and fire crews were called to Winterbourne Rd, Elizabeth Vale, just before 2am.

The home’s occupants were not injured and fireys quickly extinguished the blaze.

Fire Cause Investigators are looking into the cause.
