A thief is on the run after breaking into an eastern suburbs home, stealing a BMW then leading police on a wild chase across Adelaide.

Police were called to a report of a break-in and car theft from the home on Kensington Rd, Norwood, about 1.45am on Monday.

The intruder broke into the house and stole a handbag, wallet and car keys to the red BMW hatchback parked in the driveway, according to police.

However, the BMW’s on-board tracking showed it outside several addresses in Royston Park.

The GPS then led police through the eastern suburbs across Adelaide’s north to Elizabeth East, where the car was found abandoned at 2.45am.

Police called in a helicopter and Police Dog Enzo to find the suspect, however the driver was not found.

Inside, the stolen BMW police found another set of car keys to a Subaru and asked any residents in the Norwood, Royston Park area to check to see if they had also had keys nicked overnight.

Police are asking anyone with information or CCTV or dashcam footage that may help police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
