Man, 20, in court after allegedly stabbing can collector in back on Greenhill Rd and then videoing him

A young man allegedly stabbed another man collecting bottles and cans in the back in a random attack, then began videoing him, a court has heard.

A young man stabbed a random person in the back on Greenhill Rd and then used his mobile phone to film him as he screamed, a court has heard.

On Friday, a 20-year-old man, whose identity has been suppressed, faced the Adelaide Magistrates Court.

He has yet to plead to one aggravated count of intentionally causing harm over the alleged incident on Greenhill Rd about 6am last Saturday.

Counsel for the man asked he be released on bail, saying he had a supportive family and was currently undergoing diagnosis for suspected mental health issues.

An SA police prosecutor opposed the man’s release, saying the allegations were too serious.

He said the alleged victim was a man who had been collecting cans and bottles in the area since 2.30 that morning.

He said that man encountered the alleged stabber around 6am and their interaction was recorded by nearby CCTV cameras.

However, he said those cameras did not capture the stabbing itself – only the alleged victim clutching his back as the accused stabber ran away.

“Upon his arrest, police located a short video that had been taken on (the accused man’s) phone at 6am,” she said.

“The victim can be heard screaming, while the defendant can be heard verbally arguing with and abusing him.

“The phone also contained screenshots of media articles about the event.

The prosecutor said those screenshots clashed with the man’s claim to police that he did not remember the incident.

“He did identify himself as being the person in the CCTV footage and provided his own version (of events), saying ‘I don’t carry around knives’.”

Emergency services were called to Greenhill Rd, near Cancer Council’s Greenhill Lodge, about 6.30am on Saturday where they found the 44-year-old alleged victim with knife wounds to his back.

He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Magistrate Patrick Hill ordered a home detention bail report and remanded the accused in custody until Thursday.
