Sparks fly in ATM grinder robbery at Golden Grove

Thieves have attempted a brazen and extremely loud service station robbery using an angle grinder in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Thieves armed with an angle grinder attempted to steal an ATM from a Golden Grove service station in the early hours of Sunday but the noise made by the machinery was so loud police were called and arrested one of the suspects.

Vision from the scene shows one man breaking through a service station window with a sledgehammer, before an accomplice with an angle grinder attempts to break into the ATM.

The 7NEWS vision then shows one man knocking down two police officers as they tried to detain the offender who drives off in a black Subaru.

SA Police said they had been “called to a service station on Golden Grove Rd after reports of an angle grinder sound coming from the premises’’.

The angle grinder was found at the scene as well as the damaged ATM.

“Patrols quickly responded and on arrival found two men exiting the store through a hole in the roller shutter,’’ police said.

“One suspect ran off through the forecourt but was arrested after a short foot chase.

“The second suspect got into the driver’s seat of a black Subaru station wagon that was parked at the front. Officers tried to stop him from driving, but he reversed the car into bollards and drove off.’’

Police searched the area using dogs and air patrols but did not find the second suspect.

The Subaru was reported stolen overnight from Greenwith.

A 48-year-old man from Holden Hill has been arrested and charged with serious criminal trespass, theft and unlawful possession. He was bailed to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on October 31.
