Man arrested, group injured in car crash at Port Elliot

An alleged hit and run crash outside a pub has left a young man fighting for life and four other people injured.

Just after 1.30am on Saturday morning, a blue Ford sedan reversed into a group of people at the front of the Royal Family Hotel on North Tce, Port Elliot.

The impact left a 22-year-old man from Hindmarsh Island with serious life-threatening injuries, including to his legs, and several people were pinned against a wall according to police.

The man was flown to Royal Adelaide Hospital where he is undergoing surgery as of 10am.

Four other people – a 21-year-old man from Goolwa Beach, a 37-year-old woman from Port Elliott, a 20-year-old woman from Inman Valley and a 30-year-old man from Blackwood – were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

CCTV footage captured by a next-door business shows the driver of the sedan pulling up to the hotel at 1:40am.

The car lingers for five minutes with its lights on before a group of people enter the frame and appear to surround the vehicle.

The car slowly drives forward with the group following it, exiting the frame briefly, before the people appear to be knocked back in the opposite direction.

One figure can be seen bending over in pain and staggering to sit down against a wall, while several others frantically dial triple-0.

Police and ambulance crews arrive on the scene a few minutes later and begin treating the wounded.

Soon afterwards, the suspected driver, a 37-year-old NSW man, returned to the scene and was charged with a slew of driving-related offences.

Police are still unsure of the relationship between those involved but believe an altercation outside the pub sparked the incident, according to Inspector Gene Vaninetti.

“There was clearly an altercation that occurred but what happened after that altercation is unclear,” Inspector Vaninetti said.

“There were a large amount of people at the premises last night, so we’re still trying to link together who is associated with who.

“The pub had just closed, last drinks had been called, hence why the patrons had spilled out onto the road and hence were waiting out the front go home.”

Inspector Vaninetti also said one of the victims was believed to be a hotel employee and it is unclear whether alcohol consumption played a role.

The vehicle believed to be involved in the crash was later found nearby on Sturt St.

Police closed North Tce during investigations but it has since been reopened.

The driver has been charged with causing harm by dangerous driving, due care and leaving the scene of a crash.

He has been refused bail and will appear before the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on Tuesday 8 October.
