SA Health posts racy safe sex reminder on Facebook for Valentine’s Day

SA Health has cheekily shared a raunchy post on social media to remind South Aussie lovebirds to practise safe sex.
The government’s health organisation used Valentine’s Day and racy innuendo to push its messaging.
The post shared to its social media accounts on Friday encouraged men to use a condom if they’re planning on being intimate, as it’s “an affordable and effective contraception option”.
“PSA: your [eggplant emoji] is not too big to wear a condom,” they wrote.
“Can’t find a condom in your size? We doubt it.
“Condoms come in a variety of sizes, and they’re your best protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).”
In a follow up comment on the post, SA Health said STIs can cause serious damage if left untreated while urging everyone to regularly get tested.
“Always pair them with water-based lube to prevent friction and breakages,” they wrote.
“Wearing condoms during sex is the best way to protect yourself.”
Readers were quick to share their thoughts, with many backing SA Health’s advice, including SA Dental who wrote: “We’re also advocates for safe oral … health”.
One commenter wrote “No Glove, No Love.”
While most of the people commenting appeared to love the endorsement, one commenter disagreed, albeit with a seemingly tongue-in-cheek response.
“Sometimes that’s the case but I’d prefer my eggplant lasagne to not taste rubbery. Each to their own I suppose,” they wrote.
SA Health isn’t the first government health department to raise eyebrows with its social media content.
Queensland Health’s Instagram is filled with eyegrabbing posts that push serious health messages.
SA Health notes there were 323 notifications of infectious syphilis in SA in 2023, an 18-fold increase since 2011. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are also on the rise.
“It’s positive to see that so many people have engaged with our ‘National Condom Day’ social media post,” a statement says.
“We’re pleased that humour can be used to increase awareness and encourage South Australians to stay healthy and safe while having fun.
“This is an incredibly important public health topic, especially as we’ve seen a significant increase in STIs, including syphilis, over the past decade. STIs are common, often go unnoticed, but can cause serious harm to your health and put others at risk if left untreated.
“Don’t be shy, get tested regularly and wear a condom during sex to protect yourself and your sexual partners.”
Population surveys in Australia and internationally show a declining trend in condom use among most groups. Fewer than 50 per cent of young people in Australia reported using a condom in 2021, compared to almost 70 per cent in 2008, in the 7th National Survey of Australian Secondary Students and Sexual Health 2021.
