SA government warn of ‘heartless’ Seniors Card scam

The state government has issued a warning for seniors to stay vigilant as a new scam website is trying to trick them into parting with their cash.

South Australian seniors are being warned not to fall for a new scam website that tricks applicants into paying for a Seniors Card.

The illegal website, www.theseniorsassistant.com, claims to specialise in “providing assistance and consultation services” for senior-related applications and processes like the Seniors Card.

However, the legitimate SA Seniors Card, available from www.seniorscard.sa.gov.au, is always free of charge, with no need for applicants to disclose their bank, credit card or PayPal details.

“Let me be crystal clear: applying for a Seniors Card is completely free. If someone is asking for payment, it’s a scam,” Seniors Minister Nat Cook said.

“You will never be asked to disclose your financial details when applying for a Seniors Card.

“If you encounter a site asking for payment, report it immediately. It’s not just wrong, it’s illegal.

“These fraudulent websites are not only deceptive, but they also heartlessly target some of the most vulnerable members of our community.”

Seniors are encouraged to stay vigilant by looking for the official Government of South Australia and Seniors Card logos to verify the website before applying for membership.

Those that have provided payment to an unofficial website are urged to contact their bank immediately and make a report to Scamwatch at www.scamwatch.gov.au
