A rescue effort has been safely resolved at a sinkhole in Mount Gambier’s city centre after reports a man had become stuck just before 9am on Wednesday.

As of 10.56am the situation was under control, according to SA Police.

Police and emergency services responded to the incident at the Cave Gardens, a sinkhole in central Mount Gambier that is a popular tourist destination with stairs and a viewing platform.

Early reports were of a man seen falling into the sinkhole.

The rescue operation involved SES and CFS personnel and police requested a drone to assist with the task.

It is believed the man was not seriously injured.

SA Police said there was no threat to the wider public but asked people to avoid the area.

The Advertiser has been told the man was heard talking but was not visible.

In 2020 a young man fell 30m to his death in the same gardens.

Bradley Streeter, 20, was with friends at the popular Cave Gardens in the city centre, just before midnight in February, when he fell into the sinkhole from the lower viewing platform.

It is understood he was performing a handstand on a railing when the incident occurred.
