Sickening prison phone calls between a monster mother and her jailed partner have been released, revealing she joked about her daughter’s cankles shortly before her death.

Crystal Leanne Hanley, 49, now awaits her fate after her terrible parenting caused defenceless Charlie Nowland to starve to death.

Charlie died in hospital on July 15, 2022, after being found unresponsive at the family home.

Chilling prison phone calls between Hanley and Charlie’s father, John Nowland in the months leading up to Charlie’s death were released to the Advertiser by the court.

In a phone call in May 2022, Hanley can be heard complaining to Nowland, who was in jail for stabbing her, about the children.

“I didn’t sign up for this Nob (nickname for Nowland) … their tantrums, their bullsh**, their f***ing crap all on my own,” she says.

“Otherwise I wouldn’t have f***ing had them.”

In another call on May 20, 2022 Hanley tells Nowland she is “pissed off”.

“I’ve had the coppers here twice,” she says

“The first time was that I don’t feed my kids and apparently f***ing Charlie was here left on her own and she’s black and blue and all this s***.”

On May 31, 2022 Charlie could be heard crying in the background “my legs are killing me”, to which Hanley replies “oh shut up” before proceeding to tell Nowland “Charlie is in that mood today”.

On Charlie’s birthday on June 24, 2022, she can be heard telling Nowland what she got for her birthday before saying she had chips and sausage for dinner.

In a phone call on July 4, 2022, Hanley tells Nowland that Charlie hadn’t been walking around for a week and a half.

“She’s got cankles and everything,” Hanley said.

“She’s a d***head and she won’t walk.”

When asked by Nowland if she’d taken her to the doctors, Hanley replied yes, even though that was a lie.

Prosecutor Kos Lesses previously told the court Charlie was “so severely malnourished to the point where her body essentially collapsed, and her heart gave way”.

Charlie weighed only 18kgs at the time of her death, however the fluid in her body would have artifactually increased her weight by a “significant amount”.

“Medical staff observed the deceased to be extremely pale, dishevelled, with lice infested hair, dirty skin and wearing a soiled nappy,” court documents read.

The court heard Hanley’s other children were examined on the day of Charlie’s death, with several of them also found to have horrific lice infestation problems.

The Munno Para family home was found to be in a “deplorable and disgusting” state, with cat faeces in the shower.

Hanley pleaded guilty to three counts of criminal neglect – with a manslaughter charge being withdrawn as a result.

Chris Kummerow, for Hanley, told the court his client was not perfect but was a “much more capable parent” before the horrific stabbing in January 2021.

The court heard Nowland stabbed Hanley in the back of the neck, while yelling that he was going to kill her.

Nowland, who pleaded guilty to causing harm with intent, was jailed for more than five years in 2022.

Mr Kummerow said Hanley developed PTSD after the stabbing and started using methamphetamine daily, leading to her being unable to care for her children.

Justice Sandi McDonald will sentence Hanley at a date to be set.
