Port Augusta man, 26, dies after being struck by car in state’s Far North

A 26-year-old from Port Augusta has died after being struck by a car on the remote Stuart Hwy.

A young man from Port Augusta has died after being struck by a car on the remote Stuart Hwy in SA’s Far North.

Emergency services were called to the serious accident at De Rose Hill, about 30km south of the Northern Territory border, on Tuesday afternoon.

The pedestrian, a 26-year-old Port Augusta man died at the scene while the driver of the car, a 71-year-old Victorian man, was not injured.

The Stuart Highway was closed in both directions for most of the night while Major Crash Investigators flew to the scene from Adelaide. However, the highway has now reopened.

Police thanked motorists, and community members at Kulgera and Marla for their patience and assistance.

On Tuesday, a spokesman for SA Police said they believed the pedestrian was walking along the highway at the time of the incident, but officers had not yet determined if the driver and the pedestrian were known to each other.
