A freak accident during an innocent game of chasey in the schoolyard has left an 11-year-old student with catastrophic injuries that required brain surgery.

On Tuesday morning during a PE lesson, Harmony Jones and her peers were playing a game of chasey in the northern suburbs school gymnasium when her legs got tangled with a boy’s and she fell.

Her father Corey Jones said her head hit the wall as a result.

“Harmony was running away from the child that was ‘it’,” he said.

“And from what I am led to believe, their feet tangled together and she (Harmony) launched off the floor and into the concrete wall … she put her hands out but her head still smacked against the wall.”

The force of the hit caused Harmony to “briefly lose her sight and hearing” but there were not visible physical injuries.

The PE teacher tasked another year 5 student to walk Harmony to the nurse’s office, where she was treated with an icepack and her mum Bianca Jones was notified.

When Ms Jones arrived to pick Harmony up, her motherly instinct kicked in and she noticed her walking “a little wobbly” and she was complaining of feeling physically exhausted and wanting to go to sleep.

Ms Jones was concerned she had sustained a head injury so drove straight to Gawler Health Srvice, where her condition rapidly deteriorated, the colour washed out of her face, she started vomiting, became incoherent before eventually losing consciousness and being put into an induced coma.

The CT scan revealed Harmony had a subdural haemorrhage, meaning she suffered a “substantial bleed” and “quite a sizeable blood clot” between the skull and the surface of the brain, which would require immediate emergency surgery.

Fortunately the quick-thinking nurses immediately organised transport to the surgery theatre at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Mr Jones said doctors hailed the surgery a success but warned it would be a long road to recovery.

Almost five days on, Harmony is getting her nutrients from a feeding tube, can’t stay awake for longer than 10-minute bursts, her speech is slowed and she can only walk short distances.

Mr Jones said the prognosis for Harmony wasn’t clear cut at this stage as head injuries vary from person to person but they hoped to see their little girl return to her old self again soon.

Mr Jones said his wife and daughter should be commended.

“Honestly, Bianca and Harmony are the heroes of this story,” he said.

“I think it’s important to raise awareness for how to treat head injuries, especially when there isn’t anything obviously wrong,” he said.

“My wife did the right thing in not giving in to Harmony’s complaints and taking her to the hospital … because if she hadn’t done that and Harmony had gone to sleep, who knows if she would be here with us today.

“But Harmony too has been kicking amazing progress goals.”
