A small and private funeral service was held for convicted backpacker killer Bradley Murdoch on Thursday.

Notorious outback murderer Bradley John Murdoch has been farewelled by a handful of family members in a private service at Alice Springs on Thursday.

The convicted killer died at the palliative care facility at the Alice Springs Hospital on July 15, after a battle with lung cancer that had spread to his brain.

7News Adelaide reported that the service for Murdoch was held at a funeral home a short distance from the hospital where he spent his final days in palliative care.

Murdoch was cremated and it is expected he will have his ashes spread at an undisclosed location chosen by his family in the coming days.

He was found guilty for the murder of British backpacker, Peter Falconio, and the abduction of his girlfriend Joanne Lees near the remote Northern Territory town of Barrow Creek on July 14, 2001.

In 2005, he was found convicted and sentenced to life behind bars.

Murdoch maintained he was innocent throughout his incarceration, meanwhile, the body of Peter Falconio has never been recovered, with its location said to be taken to the grave with Murdoch.

His family broke decades of silence following his death, describing him as a “devoted father, father-in-law, and proud Poppy”.
