Magpie fan Ted Sands discharged Adelaide hospital after freak Bobby Hill Gather Round accident

The gutsy little Collingwood supporter had just one thing on his mind when he came out of surgery, his mother has revealed.

8yo who broke thumb marking ball from Bobby Hill receives sweet message

A young Collingwood supporter has been discharged from hospital after a rogue football kicked by his favourite player, Bobby Hill, broke his hand.

While his beloved Pies were battling the Swans at Adelaide Oval on Friday night, Ted Sands, 8, underwent surgery on his hand at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

“Teddy sat up and watched the first half before they took him to surgery,” mum Brooke told The Advertiser.

“He came out of the theatre after midnight, opened his eyes and said ‘did we win?’”

Ms Sands said her son’s injury was a “clean break” resulting from “an unfortunate accident.”

“Ted was waiting behind the goals at training and a Bobby Hill ball bounced over the fence and right into his thumb” she said.

“We were literally only here for about two hours before it happened.

“We got to Adelaide, checked into the caravan park and headed straight to the open training session and hats when it all happened.”

Ms Sands, who drove over with Ted, her eldest son Archie and their grandmother Vicki, will return back to Ballarat on Tuesday, without watching the game they came for.

Despite the ordeal, the family have “fallen in love with SA,” and pledged to return next year.

“Their Gather Round experience is spectacular and we’ll be back next year to watch a game that time,” she said.

She also thanked the nurses and surgeons at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital for their care over the weekend.

Following the incident, Bobby Hill sent the young Pies fanatic a video and message of support.

“Hey Teddy, Bobby Hill here, just wishing you all the best and hopefully you’re feeling alright after the incident with your thumb,” he said.

“Hopefully you enjoy the game tonight, and I hope we get the win and you enjoy it, and all the best … go the Pies.”

Collingwood FC have also invited the family to the club for a visit after Gather Round.

“The club have been fantastic,” Ms Sands said.

“They have invited us to the club for a visit once (we’re) all back in Victoria so (we’re) very grateful to them.”
