Netherlands hydrogen hub Liberals’ answer to Labor energy plan

The State Government says it has its way to create thousands of energy jobs after Labor revealed its big plans for hydrogen.

The export of South Australian-produced green hydrogen to Europe’s largest port will be studied as part of a bid to replace coal and oil-fired energy.

The State Government has revealed a study of green hydrogen export to Rotterdam in the Netherlands, which is developing a hydrogen hub to supply the region with renewable energy.

The move was part of a response to Labor's $593m Hydrogen Jobs Plan, revealed by The Advertiser, which includes a hydrogen-fired power station designed to cut energy bills and create thousands of jobs.

Energy Minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan said the state’s Hydrogen Action Plan released in 2019 had a vision of becoming a world-class renewable hydrogen supplier, which could help lead to SA producing about 500 per cent of current grid demand in renewable energy by 2050.

“Europe will remain a net importer of energy. However, it will gradually shift from grey to green,” he said.

Responding to Labor’s hydrogen policy, the Liberals rejected the claim it would create more than 11,000 jobs.

Liberal analysis says the key component – 10,000 jobs created by kickstarting projects from a $20bn pipeline of proposed renewable energy investments – would rely on a proposed interconnector with NSW going ahead. But Labor has been opposed to that.

“Labor are opposing the interconnector but then trying to claim all the jobs the interconnector will bring with their policy,” the Liberal analysis says.

It also argues a government-run generator, as proposed by Labor, would result in competitors leaving the market, risking higher power prices.

Labor’s modelling – an executive summary has been publicly released – does not consider the impact of government investment in generators on the national electricity market.
