Mr Foster told 9 News that after medicating her, the hospital “kept her there for an hour, hour and a half, and sent us home”.

Two days later, Milla had unexpectedly died.

“She was a really, really good girl … I’m waiting to wake up and just see her,” Mr Foster said.

Her stepmother said they are still waiting for answers.

“You don’t think that gastro is something that could potentially kill, especially a young person who’s so healthy,” she said.

“Even if the doctors tell you you might be paranoid or you’re just overcautious, just listen to it, because it’s there for a reason.”

The bereaved family has started a GoFundMe to cover funeral costs and hardships which has raised more than $20,000 to date.

The funding page reads: “We have been deeply impacted by her loss and are reaching out to anyone within our community to help us with the unexpected funds we will be facing within the next week or so.

“We Miss you so much Milla and love you always and forever.”

Mr Foster said the couple had been receiving social media messages from Milla’s friends sending condolences.

Health Minister Chris Picton said his “heartfelt sympathies go out to Milla’s family,” adding that Kapunda Hospital and SA Health would co-operate with a coronial investigation.

“There’s a lot of sweet things that have come from all her little friends, we’ve been getting all these friend request from little people and I’m like ‘Who are you?’”
