A grieving family has shared their heartbreak after a 36-year-old father was killed in a crash near a notorious Two Wells intersection.
Michael John Grbevski, was turning his blue Kawasaki motorcycle on to Port Wakefield Highway from Mallala Rd when it collided with a Mazda SUV about 5.30pm on Wednesday. Mr Grbevski died at the scene.
His sister, Kylie Ford, told The Advertiser her brother had been on his way home after visiting his dad.
She said he was “a kind-hearted, loving father of three of, one girl and two boys”.
Ms Ford said breaking the news to his children about the fatal crash had been “the hardest part”.
“He was 36, just four days shy of his 37th birthday that he shares with his youngest child; his children and his bike were his passions,” she said.
“It’s a horrible intersection, and I warn other drivers to use caution there, and to always drive safely.
“I’m still in shock. My heart aches for him and his children.
“He will be dearly missed, and always in our hearts.
“Love you forever and always my big bro.”
Friend Max Jaeger also paid tribute to Michael online, saying: “Lost a good mate in this one. It does need something done as I said just last week, it’s a high-speed death trap. Mixed with impatience and indecision, it’s fatal.”
The driver of the Mazda, a 60-year-old man from James Well, on the Yorke Peninsula, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. He was not injured, but underwent mandatory drug and alcohol testing.
The crash shut down Mallala Rd and part of the highway for several hours while Major Crash officers investigated.
Two Wells resident Jacob Cleaver said the intersection of Port Wakefield Hwy and Mallala Rd had long been a danger zone, with crashes increasing as the town’s population continued to grow.
He said the short merging lanes for cars turning onto the highway from the 60km/h zone on Mallala Rd often left drivers taking dangerous risks to enter traffic travelling at 110km/h.
“It is pretty dangerous. Just people being impatient, really,” he said.
“People just can’t wait. From what I’ve seen, anyway … it’s just people pulling out onto the highway.”
Mr Cleaver said the Mallala Rd intersection was less prominent than the main turn-off into town at Brooks Rd, which could catch unfamiliar drivers off guard as they merged.
Some locals have also raised the need for better lighting and signage to improve visibility and safety in the area.
“They’ve had quite a few crashes there … there’s been a few deaths there. That one seems to have crashes all the time,” Mr Cleaver said.
Many other residents have echoed similar concerns, with some recounting their own close calls at what they describe as a “very dangerous” section of road.
“I’ve had so many close calls there where people just pull out or cut across the intersection,” one woman said.
“Last week I had a B-double pull across in front of me when it entered Mallala Rd. It was a good job I had good brakes,” said another.
The driver of the Mazda in Wednesday’s fatal crash, a 60-year-old from James Well, was taken to hospital for the treatment of minor injuries and mandatory drug and alcohol testing.
The rider’s death is the 39th life lost on SA roads – and the fifth motorcyclist death – so far in 2025.
