Adelaide Crowd erupts after hole in one

Hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of aircraft, including several private jets and a massive charter airliner, have ensured LIV Golf’s superstars arrived in Adelaide in style.

Spanish champion Jon Rahm, US major winner Bryson DeChambeau, and Australia’s contingent of golfers, led by Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman, jetted into town on Sunday on an opulent AirX A340 charter plane.

The commercial airliner is understood to cost about $40,000 per hour to rent, and features 100 flat bed seats, lounge room seating, VIP in-flight catering and eight flight attendants.

At least five other private jets, priced between $30 million and $95 million, touched down at Adelaide Airport this week from all corners of the globe.

While their owners are unknown, it’s believed the jets have flown some of the sport’s biggest names to Adelaide, including Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson, as well as LIV’s corporate high-flyers.

An airport spokesman said it was unique to see so many multimillion-dollar private jets in Adelaide.

“Adelaide sees its share of corporate jets but its unusual to see this many at once with several arriving from international ports of origin,” he said.

“It was also great to see the larger AirX Airbus A340 charter in town for the first time carrying some of the LIV golfers.”

The luxurious jets have a wide array of impressive features, from private bedroom suites with ensuites, full kitchens, leather seating, fine wood veneers, spacious lounges and conference areas, to high-speed in-flight internet connectivity and multiple pop-up HD LCD monitor screens.

LIV Golf’s international stars are some of the world’s highest-paid athletes with a combined net worth of over a billion dollars.

Rahm was reportedly lured across with a multi-year deal worth almost $500 million, while Mickelson, one of the sport’s all-time greats and a six-time major winner, pocketed a rumoured $320 million.

A host of other top players secured nine-figure sign-on fees to join the 14-event rebel tour.

This weekend, the 52-man playing field will play for a $30 million purse in the individual event at Grange Golf Club, and another $8 million will be dished out to the top teams.

Up to 100,000 people are expected to walk through the gates over the weekend, after 94,000 fans attended last year.
