A billion-dollar Melbourne entrepreneur has been ordered to stand trial in Adelaide accused of running an unlawful lottery, as he posted photos of supercars and gourmet food from a Singaporean motor expo.
On Thursday, Adrian Portelli, 35, was not legally required to attend the Adelaide Magistrates Court in person as he faced nine counts of conducting or assisting in the conduct of an unlawful lottery, and was represented by lawyer Ben Lodge.
Instead, Mr Portelli was seen living the high life during a trip to Singapore – posting videos of gourmet dinners and behind-the-scenes vision of an upcoming car expo on his Instagram story.
In December, his company Xclusive Tech Pty Ltd – which operates as LMCT + Giveaways – was charged with 10 counts of the same offence.
“We’re not here to mess around,” he wrote on Instagram.
“When the team gave me the opportunity to have an entire hall to showcase part of my collection, it was a no-brainer. I grew up going to MotorEx as a kid, so to now be an owner and use my network and what I’ve built to breathe new life into the show … it’s honestly surreal.
“Can’t wait to see you all this weekend and thank you for backing me every step of the way.”
It is alleged Mr Portelli, who has an estimated personal worth of $1.29bn, and the company committed the offences between January 29, 2023 and May 16, 2024.
It is further alleged the business did not hold a licence to conduct lotteries in SA, and Mr Portelli assisted those operations by “drawing the lottery”. They each face a maximum $190,000 penalty.
On social media, Mr Portelli said if convicted he would “round it up to $200,000” provided authorities “stop wasting people’s money”.
Last month, Mr Lodge pleaded with a court to take his client’s matter to trial “as quickly as possible”, that the matters were contested and both Mr Portelli and the company would plead not guilty.
On Thursday, Chief Magistrate Mary-Louise Hribal set the matter for a two-day trial in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in September.
Outside court, Mr Lodge refused to comment when asked if his client would be appearing in person.
