A woman who witnessed the horrific moments after an alleged hit-run crash says she believes the elderly victim was trying to cross the suburban road when she was struck.
Lyn Do is a hairdresser who works at a salon meters from where the collision occurred.
She told The Advertiser she was still at work when flashing police lights lit up Hanson Rd, Mansfield Park, about 6.30pm on Sunday.
A pedestrian had been struck by a Mazda sedan right in front of her shop.
“It was very sad … I came out and saw her lying in the middle of the road,” Ms Do said.
“She had a walking stick. I think she was trying to cross and got hit. It was dark, raining — maybe the driver didn’t see her.”
The 81-year-old woman, from Woodville Gardens, died at the scene located near the field at Athol Park.
Ms Do said she was shocked to see someone of that age out walking alone in such poor weather.
“It’s a long walk to Woodville Gardens for someone her age,” she said.
“Most of the shops around here shut by 6pm, so I’m not sure where she may have been going or why she was out.”
Police allege the 29-year-old male driver behind the wheel of Mazda fled the scene but later handed himself in.
The vehicle allegedly involved has been seized, and the man has been charged with failing to stop after a crash. He is expected to face court next month.
Major Crash officers closed Hanson Rd in both directions for several hours. It reopened just after 11pm.
The woman’s death is the 37th life lost on SA roads this year.
