Glenunga International High School student in violent after-school attack at Adelaide’s Frewville McDonald’s

A witness has described the violent scenes at an eastern suburbs McDonald’s when a pair of school students set upon an older man.

Two students, including one from Glenunga International High School, were involved in a violent after-school altercation in a McDonald’s carpark with an older man, who was dragged to the ground, punched and verbally abused.

At 3.40pm on Monday, June 30 the group of boys entered the Frewville McDonald’s carpark on Glen Osmond Road before a violent altercation ensued with a 52-year-old man.

The Advertiser understands the students were aged between 13 and 15 and fled riding their bikes afterwards.

Other students, some dressed in full school uniform, watched on as the scuffle unfolded in front of several concerned witnesses.

It escalated to the point a McDonald’s staff member phoned police.

No charges have been laid.

McDonald’s worker Caitlin, 17, said she witnessed the altercation, which began when she was sitting in her car waiting to begin her shift.

“I’m just sitting there minding my business, eating my food and then I see this rush of kids, three or four of them just come outside,” she told The Advertiser.

“There’s this one kid who is just shouting at this man who was just walking through the carpark (to the restaurant).”

Caitlin said the teen shouted “horrible things” at the man before the scuffle broke out.

“He was just like, ‘oh you’re such a fat f***… you can’t even walk’,” the worker recalled.

“They just dragged him on the ground … the man wasn’t really trying to fight back.

“He was just taking it while also trying to get this kid off him. The kid was still going at him and punching him.”

Caitlin said the students only fled when they noticed her on the phone with police, saying the man was left bloodied after the confrontation.

“They just bolted off,” she said.

“There was blood coming from the left side of his mouth.”

The man then came inside the restaurant while waiting for police to arrive.

“I got him an ice pack and gave him a free meal,” Caitlin said.

She said while the violent confrontation lasted just minutes, she feared for her safety at the time.

“That’s why I got in my car because I didn’t want them to come and look at me,” the worker said.

“I was just shocked.”

An Education Department spokeswoman confirmed Glenunga International High School students were involved in the incident.

“Students from this site (and a number of other schools) were witnesses to an incident which occurred off site and out of school hours,” the spokeswoman said.

“The matter was reported to the school, the police and the Department.

“A number of students were suspended as a result of breaching the school’s expectations regarding bystander behaviour.”

An SA Police spokeswoman told The Advertiser the man was “assaulted by two teenage boys while a group of teenagers watched on”.

“The man was not seriously injured and the investigation is ongoing,” she said.
