Ex-SA Liberals member Jing Lee launches her own party
The imploding SA Liberal party now has another contender nipping at their heels.
As the state Liberals implode and are set to name their third leader in a year, former party member Jing Lee announced her bid for re-election under a new banner.
Ms Lee, an independent MLC, was joined by supporters as she launched her campaign under her new political party, Jing Lee – Better Community, on Sunday.
It comes after Liberal leader Vincent Tarzia announced he would step down on Friday and first-term MP Ashton Hurn was installed as new leader on Monday.
“Many people are disillusioned by the major parties, broken promises and infighting,” Ms Lee said.
“On the contrary, I offer a strong, independent voice that will continue to keep government accountable.
“South Australians deserve leaders who listen, act with integrity and work collaboratively to deliver real outcomes.”
While she is yet to announce a platform for the party, registered in May this year, Ms Lee said she would support policies that ease cost of living pressures, reduce red tape and ensure better access to healthcare.
“During my 15 years in parliament … which include senior leadership roles, I have had the privilege of meeting thousands of South Australians, from all walks of life, and have gained a deep understanding of what matters most to them,” Ms Lee said.
Ms Lee announced her resignation from the Liberal Party in January.
At the time, Mr Tarzia said state politics had “certainly taken its emotional toll on Jing Lee”.
When announcing his own resignation, Mr Tarzia, who succumbed to a sustained undermining campaign, said he had made the decision “to focus on his young family and his local community”.
Mr Tarzia said he made the decision after “careful reflection on the balance between leading the party, serving the people of Hartley, and being present for his young children (aged) four (and) five months with his wife, Charissa, during these formative years”.
“I look forward to continuing to represent the electorate of Hartley and I wish my party colleagues and supporters all the best,” he said.
Ms Hurn was elected unopposed on Monday morning as SA’s new opposition leader.
