An Instagram account is under fire for encouraging followers to “drink, drive and drift”.

The deactivated account encouraged drivers to be reckless on SA roads, while also urging drivers to film and share their drunk-driving escapades with the promise of anonymity.

“Send clips. Will blur photos. upload n tag”, the account description read.

It featured videos filmed across Adelaide in the hills, shopping centres and carparks – similar to several other accounts that have surfaced in recent weeks.

SA Police condemned the social media accounts with Superintendent Shane Johnson highlighting that 90 people were killed on our state’s roads last year.

“Dangerous driving behaviours was found to have contributed to 30 of these deaths,” the Officer in Charge from Traffic Services Branch said.

“Dangerous driving behaviours such as hooning and drifting is extremely irresponsible and puts people’s lives in danger.”

Mr Johnson said social media accounts that are found to be “promoting or posting dangerous driving behaviours” on SA roads are examined and could be investigated by police.

“Drivers suspected of committing offences are dealt with in accordance with road safety laws and those drivers risk losing their licence and having their vehicles impounded,” he said.

This comes after new ‘posting and boasting’ laws were introduced in South Australia last month.

Possible penalties include prison time for up to two years for activities that include violent acts, illegal activity involving motor vehicles, use of weapons or taking, damaging, destroying, removing, using, interfering with or entering property.

These laws apply regardless of whether the person posting the content was the offender.
