Six people linked to street gangs have been arrested in relation to an alleged attempted murder, which police say left an innocent, young person with a gunshot wound.

Following an investigation, Acting Assistant Commissioner John De Candia revealed police made six arrests as part of Operation Meld.

Three men, two 19-year-olds and a 21-year-old, along with three 17-year-old boys were charged – after gunshots were fired into a home on Eaton Dr in Andrews Farm in the early hours of December 16 last year.

Mr De Candia said on Thursday the six people arrested are all linked to street gangs.

“Those arrested this morning are linked to the 051 street gang,” he said. “And it is our understanding – and what will be alleged – the intended target was from the KBS street gang.

“It was (also) confirmed in the early stages of the investigation that the offenders had attended the wrong address and shot a person with no links to these people whatsoever,”

Police said the 18-year-old victim, who was not the intended target, was shot through a closed bedroom roller shutter window and was struck with one bullet to the leg.

He has made a full recovery since the attack.

Mr De Candia said there were “likely” three guns used in the incident, which showed a “high degree of planning and engagement”.

“There were three shots fired so there was more than one person there,” he said.

“Operation Meld investigators believe the attack was extensively planned and today searched seven addresses to gather evidence.

“As a result of the searches, several mobile phones have been seized and police located a firearm which is suspected to have been used in previous shootings.

“A large quantity of tablets suspected of containing MDMA were also located.”

Mr De Candia said the community should not have to put up with illegal behaviour, especially when it results in innocent bystanders being caught in the crossfire.

“It’s very fortunate that he (the unintended victim) only sustained a wound to his leg, which is terrible as it is,” he said.

“When you’re firing a gun through roller shutters you don’t know what is behind it.

“No one in the community should have to put up with that; we shouldn’t tolerate these groups and criminal offenders in the slightest.”

He said police will continue to put offenders before the justice system.

“We can continue to put them before the courts so that we’re all safe when we’re home, in our bedrooms.

All six have been charged with attempted murder. They will face court at a later date.
