A Christian Brothers College student has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a flying hammer during athletics training on Thursday night.

The 13-year-old boy was hit while practising hammer throws after school at St Albans Reserve, which is home to the Enfield Harriers Athletic Club, around 5pm.

Emergency crews, including Medstar paramedics, treated him for a serious head injury at the scene before taking him to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital for further treatment.

At 6:30pm, police were still at the oval interviewing a teenager wearing a Christian Brothers College uniform.

Several staff members of Christian Brothers College were present but could not comment on what unfolded.

College principal David Johnston told The Advertiser that a Year 7 student was involved in “a very unfortunate accident during athletics training and is currently in critical condition”.

“The accident is under ongoing investigation, with all staff and students who were present, assisting in the process,” Mr Johnston said.

“We have arranged for our school counsellors and additional support personnel to provide guidance and emotional support for both students and staff as we navigate through this difficult time.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the student, their family, friends and the wider CBC community. We kindly request that the family’s privacy be honoured during this challenging time.”

The Advertiser understands there are safety policies in place for the club, which has a hammer throwing circle.
