Bowden man arrested after multiple break-ins in Adelaide’s Prospect overnight
A Bowden man faces multiple charges after allegedly breaking into businesses in Prospect, forcing one snack bar owner to clean up damage before serving customers their morning banh mi.
A 38-year-old man has been arrested following a string of break-ins in the northern suburbs overnight.
Police were called to Sunshine Snack Bar on Churchill Road around 12:45am on Thursday after reports that a man had been captured on CCTV inside the premises.
On arrival, police found a roller shutter had been jemmied open at the front of the store, a window broken, and a door frame damaged.
While examining the scene, patrols heard sound coming from another business across the road before seeing a man flee the store on foot.
Patrols gave chase and arrested the suspect with the help of Police Dog Duke as he was allegedly attempting to escape over a nearby fence.
Police said a search of the suspect revealed he was in possession of a two ice pipes, two screwdrivers and stolen cash from inside the till of one of the businesses.
Sunshine Snack Bar owner Wendy Ngyuen said that it was “terrible” news to wake up to.
“We received the notification from the camera to say that someone in the carpark tried to break into our shop through the kitchen door but wasn’t successful,” she told FIVEAA.
“He changed his direction to the front door, pulled up the roller shutters, smashed the windows to break into the shop.”
She said the man searched the till but “unlucky for him, there’s no money in the shop.”
Ms Ngyuen arrived at the shop around 10 minutes later accompanied by several police cars.
Minutes later, she saw two police officers “drag him out” after he had been captured.
Despite the ordeal, it was business as usual at the Vietnamese restaurant with Ms Ngyuen encouraging “everyone (to) come get a banh mi.”
The suspect, from Bowden, was charged with two counts of serious criminal trespass, property damage, going equipped, resisting arrest and possessing drug equipment.
He did not apply for bail and will appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday.
