SA Police reveal new details in North Adelaide death mystery

Taking a sip of coffee while strolling away from a park where a man was later found dead, an accused murderer is filmed walking away from the crime scene.

20-year-old Rylie Lewis Everson-Clare was arrested later that day, accused of murdering Aaron Stahlhut in a quiet North Adelaide garden over the weekend,

The eerie CCTV footage showed Mr Everson-Clare walking past the camera at 6.18am.

The same camera caught Mr Stahlhut walking in the opposite direction —to his death and also with a coffee in hand — just seven minutes earlier.

A person sitting on a bench waiting for a bus can be seen not having moved much in both videos.

In the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon, police asked magistrate Luke Davis to remand 20-year-old Rylie Lewis Everson-Clare in custody on a mental health order.

Mr Everson-Clare was arrested on Sunday evening following an extensive investigation into the death of Mr Stahlhut at a quiet park just outside the CBD.

At 7.45am on Sunday, police and paramedics were called to a walking path between Brougham Pl and King William Rd in North Adelaide after reports a man had collapsed.

The man, later revealed as Mr Stahlhut, was unresponsive when police officers arrived and despite CPR from paramedics, he died in hospital.

According to Mr Everseon-Clare’s social media, the young man from North Adelaide attended Westminster School and has played soccer for Adelaide Uni.

Eastern District Detectives spent the afternoon on the scene, along with detectives from Major Crime, other police patrols and multiple SES volunteers, but later revealed the 54-year-old man from Marden was known to walk that route every morning.

In a press conference late on Sunday afternoon, police appealed for any witnesses to come forward, but would not confirm if they were treating the death as suspicious.

Mr Everson-Clare was arrested later that evening and charged with murder.

Jeff Powell, for Mr Everson-Clare, made no application for bail.

“This offence, Your Honour, is alleged to have occurred in the early hours of yesterday morning. Mr Everson-Clare was arrested yesterday evening. There is no application for bail and I am seeking a date for charge determination,” he said.

The police prosecutor asked Mr Davis to remand Mr Everson-Clare in custody under section 269x, which was not opposed Mr Powell.

This form of detention is ordered when there are investigations to be conducted into a defendant’s mental competence.

She also asked for the court to order reports into his mental competence at the time of the offending to determine if he has a possible mental health defence.

“We are seeking five months for the charge determination date,” the prosecutor said.

“Can it also be noted on the court file that prosecution have handed defence counsel a USB, which contains the record of interview.”

Mr Everson-Clare will appear in court again in August.

Mr Stahlhut has been described as “tough but sweet” by a friend who visited the scene on Monday morning.

The colleague, who wished to remain anonymous, said she worked with Mr Stahlhut in the public service, often having lunch with him.

“He was a toughy,” she told The Advertiser.

“He was someone who overcame every challenge.

“He never complained about anything.

“It’s devastating.”
