Adelaide University extends Year 11 results pathway to 2022, as Flinders sends out its 2021 offers

Disruptions to schooling have led Adelaide and Flinders to offer places based on Year 11 results. Now, Adelaide Uni is taking it a step further.

Adelaide University will allow next year’s Year 12s to gain entry using their Year 11 results, saying it expects schooling in 2021 to remain disrupted by the pandemic.

In May, the uni introduced the alternative pathway for this year’s Year 12 cohort.

It has accepted more than 2000 students for its 2021 intake based on Year 11 marks.

Now it has extended the scheme for another year.

“We know that students who are achieving in Year 11 are already on the right path to success at university,” deputy vice-chancellor (academic) Jennie Shaw said.

“No one, especially in regional Victoria but also across this state, is assuming that 2021 will be back to business as usual.”

Students must have As or Bs in four Year 11 subjects and be at a school in SA, the NT or border communities of NSW and Victoria to be considered for the scheme.

“This gives students the option of relying on their marks from this year, if they have achieved good results in four or more subjects, and has been warmly welcomed by schools and parents as a way of allowing students to take control over planning their future studies in this time of great uncertainty,” Prof Shaw said.

Very competitive courses, such as medicine, veterinary bioscience, physiotherapy, and dentistry, are excluded.

Flinders University is running a similar scheme for this year’s Year 12s.

On Friday it started telling hundreds of students they had a place next year based on Year 11 results, so long as they passed their final Year 12 assessments.

“We know that academic success can be measured in several ways, and we take the view that these young people have clearly demonstrated their ability in their Year 11 performance,” deputy vice-chancellor (students) Clare Pollock said.

“After the unprecedented challenges this year has thrown at us all, Flinders University is confident this approach is a good option.”

Flinders received 1600 applications for its Year 11 pathway. Offers are being made to 1350 students over the next week, with more possible once Year 11 results are verified by the students’ schools.

Among the first to hear was Kylie Ho, from Unley High, who applied to study a Bachelor of Medical Science.

“It takes a lot of pressure off me and many of my friends,” she said as she prepares for exams.

Loreto College student Katie Martin, who is from Alice Springs and spent all of Term 2 studying remotely, will study archaeology.

“I’m definitely going to Flinders to study archaeology because I’m interested in Aboriginal culture, history and love being outdoors,” she said.

Scotch College student Liam Cameron has a place in psychology.

“I’ve set my sights on this as a career as I think it’s something I could be successful in,” he said.

The highest number of applications were for the Bachelor of Nursing (Pre-Registration).

Other popular courses include medical science, psychology, health science, law, social work, criminology and education.

Both universities will still offer places through the usual ATAR and Year 12 pathways.

UniSA has not made offers based on Year 11 results but has other entry options.

The conditional offers will merge in with formal offers to be made via SATAC in January.
