While the rest of us were stuffing ourselves silly over Christmas lunch, Adelaide runner Asa Cowell was recovering from his 33rd marathon for charity in as many days.
He started his day by lacing up his sneakers for a run at the crack of dawn as part of his mission to run 50 marathons over 50 days for his 50th birthday in an effort to raise $50,000 for Catherine House.
“My kids opened their presents without me, but we knew that was going to happen and they were okay with that,” he said.
“My run has to come first unfortunately, being multiple consecutive runs (...) so we’re doing family lunch.”
But he wasn’t alone with 13 runners joining him on Wednesday morning for his run at Seacliff.
“Every day there’s a fresh wave of different people coming in and I’m often running with absolute strangers,” he said.
“I’m really grateful for those that call in while I’m running to check on me and everyone that comes along to run with me.”
Now well past the halfway mark since starting his herculean quest last month, he has
run 1,410 km and raised around $42,500 for Catherine House, which provides crisis accommodation for women experiencing homelessness in SA.
“Its been fantastic, the support has been phenomenal,” he said.
The journey has been smooth sailing for Mr Cowell whose body is “holding up a lot better” then he thought it would.
