Northern suburbs residents including cancer patients are set to benefit from the opening of the $49m Playford Health Hub, opposite the Lyell McEwin Hospital
The private specialist medical centre including comprehensive cancer care services officially opened on Tuesday at Elizabeth Vale, marking completion of Stage 2 of the overall $165m project.
The four-level building is South Australia’s first 6-Star-Green-Star designed medical building and offers cancer patients access to radiation therapy and medical oncology under one roof.
Officials say this will streamline cancer treatment schedules and reduce stress.
Clinpath Pathology and Radiology SA also offer a full range of diagnostic services and the Hub also houses specialists across cardiology, respiratory and sleep, ear nose and throat, orthopaedics, general medicine and surgery.
Cancer care provider GenesisCare is now treating patients at its new radiation therapy centre and joins the Calvary Connery Centre, which launched its services in the hub last year, providing chemotherapy and haematology treatment services.
Around 2500 people are diagnosed with cancer in Adelaide’s north each year, and the City of Playford’s population is anticipated to grow by 37 per cent by 2036 to 130,000 people.
The specialist medical centre is part of a multistage health precinct planned to include a future Calvary Health Care private hospital as Stage 3 of the development.
Health Minister Chris Picton said: “We welcome new health services in the north which complement the Malinauskas Labor Government’s expansion of health capacity for this growing population of Northern Adelaide.
“Private health providers such as GenesisCare play an important role in providing quality healthcare to South Australians, in addition to the services provided in the public health system.”
He noted the Hub includes the Older Persons Emergency Review and Assessment centre, funded by the state government and run by the public system, providing care to older people who would otherwise need to go to a hospital emergency department.
GenesisCare state general manager Duy Tran said: “This single building offers GenesisCare’s radiation therapy facilities, chemotherapy and haematology services at the Calvary Connery Centre and access to Clinpath Pathology and Radiology SA.
“We’re proud to open this facility in partnership, for the benefit of local patients in northern Adelaide region who can access comprehensive cancer care closer to their homes and support networks.”
