Six-time premiership player Scott Greenhough joins Portarlington

One of local footy’s most dominant ruckman has found a new club after winning six premierships with his former team. He details his reasons for the move.

After six flags, it was never going to be an easy decision for one of the Essendon District Football League’s premier ruckman to shift allegiances.

However, veteran big man Scott Greenhough will do exactly that, moving to Portarlington for the 2025 BFNL season.

And while he’s sad to be leaving so many great memories behind, the six foot four star is excited about the Demons’ trajectory after a circuitbreaking three-win season this year.

Portarlington hadn’t won a game since 2019 before its Round 1 win over Newcomb.

Greenhough, who relocated to Mt Duneed in 2020 and has a plumbing business based in Corio, is looking forward to a new era in the Bellarine.

He joins from EDFL outfit Deer Park.

There, Greenhough was part of five Western Football League flags before the Lions moved to the EDFL in 2023 and immediately tasted premiership success.

“It’s more a fresh change, a new start, a new challenge,” Greenhough said on Wednesday.

“They’ve told me where they’ve come from and where they want to go to ... it sounded pretty exciting to be honest.

“And it’s something different to what I’ve experienced at my previous time at Deer Park.

“I love the beach and the coast, playing by the water most weeks will be nice as well.”

Greenhough also has a strong connection at Portarlington, having played senior footy with Hoppers Crossing with current Demon Daniel Riosa.

Greenhough, who played 14 games in three seasons for Collingwood’s VFL team and came third in the club’s best and fairest this year, has produced a glittering EDFL resume.

However, it began laster than most.

Enjoying a growth spurt in Year 11, Greenhough started his footy career at the Warriors in the under-18s, after spending his younger years playing basketball and volleyball.

Within a few winters, he was playing for the Western Jets in 2012 after a spell of glandular fever.

He said it was a tough decision to tell the Lions he was leaving.

“They understood, they obviously wanted me to stay and to be honest there was a part of me that wanted to stay, it’s always hard to leave a club that you’ve been at for so long,” he said.

“So many memories and relationships with people there. I love my time there.

“They’ve been great to be honest, I can’t say a bad word about Deer Park at all, they’ve been great to me.”

However, with four kids at home, switching to the Demons made for less time on the road.

Greenhough, who was named in the 2023 EDFL team of the year, will obviously be Port’s number one ruckman, but he’ll also spend some time developing the juniors.

The Demons’ pre-season begins on November 13.
