NT missing persons: Regene, 19, found safe and well in bushland

A teenager missing in the remote Northern Territory has been found after more than 48 hours. Read the details.

A teen missing for more than 48 hours in the remote Northern Territory has been found safe and well.

Regene, 19, was located in bushland about 4km from Nulawan Outstation in the Roper Gulf Region at about midday on Tuesday.

It marked a happy end to a widespread search launched after the teen was last seen leaving Ngukurr home on his motorbike at 6am on Sunday, June 22.

It was believed he was headed to Nulawan Outstation – 23km to the east of Ngukurr – but when he never arrived loved ones raised the alarm with authorities.

On Monday the Search and Rescue Section deployed aerial assets including Police Airwing, Challenger Jet Aircraft and helicopters to conduct searches in the area.

Local police, alongside members from Numbulwar and Katherine, local rangers and community volunteers, co-ordinated a ground search.

That included leaving “Search and Rescue Containers” in the bush – containers filled with water, food, a distress beacon and signalling devices that were placed where Regene might stumble across them.

Members from the Territory Response Group were deployed to assist with the ground search using ATVs and motorbikes, and door knocks were also conducted in Ngukurr Community.

Search efforts continued on Tuesday, with additional resources from the Territory Safety Division and NT Emergency Services volunteers brought in.

Local police put out a call for any volunteers who wanted to help the search efforts, conducting a briefing at the Ngukurr police station on Tuesday morning.

Loved ones on social media called for Regene’s safe return.

“I couldn’t sleep I was thinking of you,” one said.

“My little brother hope you’re found safe please come back to us,” said another.

Just after 1pm on Tuesday, June 24, NT Police confirmed Regene had been found.

He was taken tot eh local clinic for assessment, and police thanked the public for their assistance in the search efforts.
