School holiday guide: The 650+ activities in NT to stop parents from going insane

From hip hop to mountain biking to free films, the Territory is abuzz with activities these school holidays.

The school holidays have arrived in the NT but do not fear, there are plenty of activities on offer to keep the whole family entertained and the bored tantrums at bay.

From skateboarding to hip hop to mountain biking, there is something for everyone over the next few weeks.

Over 650 free and low-cost activities are available across the Territory these school holidays to help keep everyone smiling.

In Central Australia bike-fixing workshops with Bikes Mwerre and mountain biking are on offer for young riders while in Big Rivers kids can enjoy skateboarding sessions, free films at Katherine Cinema and lure-painting workshops.

For those who have rhythm or are trying to find it, dance workshops with TRACKS Dance will be rolled out across homelands and remote communities in East Arnhem including Galiwin’ku, Yirrkala and Milingimbi as well as the Nylon Zoo and other activities.

In other dance news, hip hop dance workshops will also be touching down in Palmerston with Corrugated Iron at the Recreation Centre, as well as free recording sessions at the Gulwa Recording Studio.

Sports delivered by High Calibre are scheduled in West Daly while in the Tiwi Islands, boxing, BBQ and Auskick sessions will be kicking off.

A packed schedule in Darwin to ‘make memories’ together

In Darwin young people can enjoy self-care workshops at SHAK Youth Hub or a range of activities from City of Darwin’s packed program.

Whether it is catching a movie at the Deckchair Cinema, Gaming After Dark, Lego Club, FREEze Skate or more practical sessions with Get That Job! workshops and understand why recycling matters sessions, it will be hard to be bored in the Top End.

Families and children in Darwin can also connect with the NT Fire and Rescue, the Deaf Connect Team or enjoy tailored sessions like Auslan Family Story Time ensuring no one misses out.

For Children’s Week Art Exhibition in October, young artists can also drop off a handmade masterpiece for this year’s theme ‘Everyone should know about Children’s Rights’.

City of Darwin acting chief executive, Natalie Williamson, urged families to engage with the program and explore the city and maybe something new during the holidays.

“Every year we aim to offer fresh and exciting events for children and their families to enjoy together across the city,” Ms Williamson said.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to try new activities, make memories and have a whole lot of fun.”

Minister for Youth, Seniors and Equality, Jinson Charls, said these school holidays were about giving young people the chance to try new things, see friends or make new ones and build confidence.

“With more than 650 activities right across the NT, including arts and sports to music, gaming and cultural workshops, there’s something for everyone to get involved in,” he said.

“Our government is backing local youth organisations with real investment so they can keep delivering the programs that matter for young Territorians.”

He mentioned one of these organisations is Dream Impact Inspire who help run DJ, mentoring, boxing and community engagement programs.

During the holidays, they will deliver boxing and mentoring sessions at Wurrumiyanga on the Tiwi Islands, helping young people get active, learn new skills and build confidence.
