THE Salamanca Arts Centre will be given a $200,000 revamp thanks to federal funding announced on Monday by local independent MP Andrew Wilkie.

Mr Wilkie said he had secured the grant to enhance and beautify the courtyard to attract more people and provide better facilities for local artists.

He announced the funding with Salamanca Arts Centre chief executive Joe Bugden in Hobart this morning.

“I’ve been lobbying the Federal Government for funds to redevelop the Salamanca Arts Centre courtyard for some time and I am thrilled that the Government has committed $200,000 towards the project,” Mr Wilkie said.

“Art has an inherent value and is also central to Tasmania’s booming tourism scene.”

The money will be spent to refit existing retail spaces as shared workshops.

A vertical garden, timber seating and shade umbrellas will be installed in the courtyard and sound and light infrastructure improved.

“The courtyard already holds a special place in Hobart’s heart as the home of Rektango on Friday nights,” Mr Wilkie said.
