Teen dead, second seriously hurt after crash at Mt Pleasant

An 18-year-old boat salvager is being remembered as a “funny” and “outgoing” friend after he was tragically killed in a crash which also left his mate seriously hurt.

A young boatie has been remembered as “the perfect person” as friends and family reel from is devastating death in a crash at Mackay.

Lachlan McPhee, 18, had been driving with a friend southbound on the Bruce Hwy when he struck a B-double truck on the corner of Heaths and Sams Road at Mount Pleasant at 1.12am Saturday.

He tragically died at the scene while a second 18-year-old boy from Blacks Beach was rushed to Mackay Hospital with “significant life-threatening injuries”.

A MHHS spokeswoman said the Blacks Beach man remained in a serious but stable condition.

The truck driver, a man in his 30s, was uninjured.

Loved ones gathered at the site of the crash to lay flowers and pay their respects for what one friend described as a “funny” and “outgoing” best mate.

Second cousins Hunter James McMullen and Jack McMullen said they broke down this morning when they heard the news.

“A lot of people have died in our life and I’ve never cried and today I bawled my eyes out,” Hunter said.

“It’s not going to be the same. Everyone loses someone but this is someone that you don’t want to lose.”

Lachlan worked at the Marina salvaging boats with his cousin Clayton Dreghorn who now has to go to work every day without his right hand man.

“If a boat was sinking, he was the one that was there to pull you out,” Hunter said.

“And no one else could do it. They were the dream team, them two.”

Friends and family have taken to social media to pay their respects including Lachlan’s dad Adrian who said “the more people that see the face of this beautiful soul the better! Rest in peace my baby boy”.

Lachlan’s grandmother also left a comment saying “our beautiful boy our memories of you are so precious and always in our hearts”.

Friends remembered him as a “kind hearted funny bloke” and a “legend” who was taken too soon.

A police spokeswoman said around 1am a Mitsubishi Lancer was travelling south bound on the Bruce Hwy when it crashed with a semi-trailer turning into Sams Rd.

A Queensland Fired Department spokeswoman said the car was on fire by the time they arrived on scene.

The intersection was closed for up to four hours while crews cleared the tragic scene.

Sams Rd was eventually reopened by 6.45am.
Police are appealing for anyone who has witnessed it to come forward and the investigation at this time is ongoing.
