Redbank Plains man charged with fraud over alleged bank scam

A young Ipswich man has been charged with fraud after allegedly posing as a bank employee in an attempt to swindle thousands from a Fraser Coast resident as part of a wider scam.

An Ipswich man has been charged with fraud after allegedly posing as a bank employ in an effort to swindle $17,000 from a Fraser Coast resident.

Police said the 20-year-old from Redbank Plains was caught during an ongoing investigation in to claims scammers, posing as bank employees, had been calling people and saying other unknown parties were trying to steal money from their account.

The scammer would then gain access to their target’s personal computer by asking them to input a code.

The targets were then asked to withdraw cash and give it to an unknown person, who would come to their home to take the money and keep it safe.

The 20-year-old was arrested by police while allegedly trying to collect $17,000 from a home at Granville, near Maryborough.

Investigations into the alleged scam and the possibility of involvement by other people are continuing.

Police urged anyone who believed they may have been targeted by this or a similar scam to come forward.

Maryborough CIB Officer in Charge Detective Senior Sergeant Mick Polit said it was important to be vigilant when engaging with people on the phone or online.

“Being asked to provide access to your bank account or withdraw money is a red flag,” Detective Senior Sergeant Polit said.

“If in doubt, don’t engage, speak to your bank directly, and report the potential scam.

“Please also look out for the older people in your community and educate them to be aware of the dangers.

“Police will continue to investigate alongside other government agencies.”

The 20-year-old is scheduled to appear at Maryborough Magistrates Court on May 12.
