NAPLAN minimum standards increased as program undergoes changes

Tasmania’s top academic schools have been named, as the full list of every school’s 2022 NAPLAN results are revealed.

And the best independent schools across the state have also emerged, with non-government schools leading the pack across primary and secondary NAPLAN results.

While the public Princes Street Primary School topped the table for Year 5 results, seven of the top 10 NAPLAN primary schools were independent.

The top independent school in Tasmania was Fahan School across both primary and secondary results.

For primary schools, The Launceston Prepatory School and Kingston’s Calvin Christian School finished in the Top 5 for NAPLAN results in 2022.

Non-government schools dominated results for secondary schools, with just one public school making the top 20: Taroona High School.

The Top 10 independent secondary schools for NAPLAN results were, in order:

  1. Fahan School
  2. The Friends’ School

Princes Street Primary also scored ‘above average’ in Year 5 reading, writing and numeracy when compared to students with a similar background.

The Sandy Bay school had 349 students in 2022, with 27 teaching staff.

Principal Ricky Oates said the school looked forward to NAPLAN.

“It’s a really good day in the year event where we can actually get a good snapshot of what’s going on in the school to see how well we’re going and we do use that data with the other data that say these are the areas of strength and this is the area where students are falling down,” Mr Oates said.

“We’re not actually really looking at the student’s achievement, we’re actually looking at the growth because we want every student to get maximum growth in their learning.

“We’re getting really good growth, but our top performing students we can’t just let them cruise so they don't hit their mark. The real focus became about looking at the student data for those top performing students [and asking], what are their needs?”

Other primary schools who finished in the top five for NAPLAN in 2022 were Fahan School, The Launceston Preparatory School, South Hobart Primary School and Calvin Christian School.

Tassie’s top secondary school was Fahan School, who had an average score of 625.2 across Year 9 reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.

The Friends’ School, OneSchool Global Hobart, John Calvin School in Launceston and St Michael’s Collegiate School rounded up the top five secondary schools in the state.

Many other Tassie schools performed well in NAPLAN last year, including Wesley Vale’s Andrews Creek Primary School, who scored ‘well above average’ in Year 5 reading, writing and spelling.

Mowbray Heights Primary School and Longford Primary Schools were also high performers for small schools, both scoring ‘well above average’ in reading, writing and numeracy.

And Smithton’s St Peter Chanel Catholic School performed ‘well above average’ across the board in Year 5 reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.

Hobart’s OneSchool Global had a fantastic year, performing ‘well above average’ in Year 9 reading, writing, grammar and numeracy.

The Claremont school — with just 113 enrolled students last year — was the fourth best NAPLAN performer for secondary school results and eighth in the state for primary schools.

Education Minister Roger Jaensch said there was “some long-term gains for Tasmania in primary school literacy” following initial results released in October 2022.

“Tasmanian students’ participation in NAPLAN was relatively higher than the Australian average, demonstrating the resilience of our students, together with the support of their schools and families, to remain engaged in their learning, despite the challenges posed by Covid this year,” he said.

“Tasmanian students tend to perform around the same level as all Australian students in the reading and writing across years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Tasmania’s results in reading at all year levels indicate that this is one of our strongest domains.”
