A neighbour has recounted how a family had to flee their home and leave their belongings behind after a fire threatened to destroy their home.

The family escaped the house fire overnight which consumed the back of their two-storey home on Capri St in Caloundra.

Flames and large billows of smoke from the blaze could be seen from streets away as fire raged.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said firefighters arrived at 9.45pm while the back of the house was completely on fire.

It’s understood the fire started in the rear side of the house and started heading forward.

The spokesman said the back part of the house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, but they were able to put it out by 11.05pm.

He said the family in the home was accounted for.

The spokesman said there was significant damage to that part of the home.

It’s believed the downstairs of the home was not damaged.

Another spokeswoman said the flames were under control by 10.24pm and then were out about 20 minutes later, with crews still dampening out hotspots.

It is not currently known what caused the fire and fire investigators will be at the Capri St home today.

A next-door neighbour, Jovanka, said she realised something was wrong when she heard beeping and a commotion coming from the house on Tuesday night.

The neighbour said she went out to the back of her house to check if any of her belongings were in danger twice, but she couldn’t see any signs of fire.

It wasn’t until the third time she went to look that the danger became evident.

“I went out again and saw my neighbour … and I asked her what was going on,” Jovanka said.

“I said, ‘I can’t see any fire here’.

“But before I even finished the sentence, the flames ignited in the bedroom and came up out of the window.

“It was very fast.”

Jovanka said the couple “are very lovely people” and the most important thing is that “everyone is okay”.

“Thankfully, they just took the baby and ran outside,” she said.

“I gave [the mum] one of my robes to wear because it was very cold and they didn’t have time to take anything.

Jovanka said the fire was “very traumatic” and “very scary”.

“[The mum] would have been the most scared for the baby,” she said.

“The most important thing is that they all got out safe.

“Everything else can be replaced.”

There are suggestions the fire might have been accidentally caused by a lit candle.

Queensland Ambulance Service checked the family, but no one was taken to hospital.

The shocked mother can be seen talking with firefighters with her young daughter by her side wrapped in a blanket.
