NRL superstar Reece Walsh’s performance against a Parramatta Eels side that downed the Brisbane Broncos in a tight victory at Suncorp Stadium has attracted backlash from fans.
The star fullback had a forgettable night as the Eels downed the Broncos 22-20 at Suncorp Stadium.
After making two poor errors early in the second half, Walsh looked to have conjured victory with two pieces of magic – including what could have potentially been a matchwinning try.
First, he burst through the line to set up Billy Walters for a try and then pounced on a mistake from rookie Eels fullback Joash Papalii to score the matchwinner in the final minute.
But The Bunker took the try off Walsh because he was off-side in the lead-up play. By the buzzer, Walsh had officially recorded three errors and conceded a penalty.
At his best, the star fullback is one of the most electrifying players in the NRL and he was integral to the Broncos’ premiership charge in 2023.
The Broncos were unbeaten since Walsh returned from a knee injury in round 14, with his speed and glamour sparking a previously faltering attack.
However, this was a night to forget for Walsh and fans did not hold back in their thoughts on his performance.
‘Walsh still a show pony’

I cannot believe the hype and money paid for Walsh. He’s absolutely cost the Broncos a top 4 spot this year. He is never in position defensively and always gambles his attacking opportunities. In 2 years time he will be a has been.

The broncos were poor tonight. You can’t win a game by rucking the ball up constantly then kicking away possession. Then Walsh made multiple errors and they directly scored off two of them. Perhaps Cobbo should come back and Walsh should be relegated until he can learn some basics.

Walsh still a show pony, played for ten minutes, curled up on the ground after taking a high ball. Did a heart muscle!

Reece Walsh best on ground tonight for the Eels he had an absolute blinder for Parra tonight, man of the match
Daniel
Terrible game all around but Walsh was shocking.
Keeping the Whigs Honest
Walsh threw a forward pass, kicked out on the full and got caught off-side.
And that was in the last ten minutes alone …
Garth
Broncos were robbed. Better team. ‘no mistakes’ Walsh – should have been man-of-the-match.

I am not a fan of Walsh, he runs too hot and cold and yes he was clearly off-side.

Walsh needs to settle down & show composure. Running around like a chook might entertain but his over zealousness costs games.

Why have they got one of the best hookers in game sitting on a bench and only playing half the game. Get him on the run out team and put Hunt on the bench, might reduce some of the confusion amongst the overload of playmakers in the spine. Walsh needs an intervention or something. In the fullback vs. fullback comparison of last nights game the rookie Joash Papalii was by far the one you would want on your team

Oh Walsh you messed up again last night
‘Walsh is the scapegoat’
Greg
I can’t just blame Walsh for the loss (his head wasn’t in the game).
The whole team seemed to be fatigued before they started.
Broncos are back to where they were 6 weeks ago – lacking was the enthusiasm to win:
– The hunger to chase the ball on kicks or spilt plays was missing.
– The lack of support for the ball runner.
– Forwards only getting back onside at tackle 3.

So it seems that Walsh is the scapegoat for the whole team. There are other players and their mistakes always seem to fly under the radar.

No point praddling on about Walsh. That game was lost by the two wingers (yes both sides) being out of position the whole game giving Parra easy access down both sidelines where most tries were scored. If Maguire couldn’t see that and act accordingly, he shouldn’t be there
‘Walsh has great talent’
Cheryl
When I saw Walsh halfway through the first half not want anything to do with a high kick and let it bounce thus allowing a try I thought he’s not a proper fullback. Your taught to never let the pill bounce. Quite obviously no communication at the back! The Eels outplayed the ponies and Moses who has only played a handful of games this yr ripped the ponies apart. If people think they can win the big one then I’m afraid the team has to buckle down as the current stuff is not good enough to go all the way. I’d put Walsh at five eight and get a decent fullback. Walsh has great talent however he’s exposed at the back under pressure. Maybe in the halves he’d be less inclined to climb the mountain every time he gets the pill?
Dan
How has Walsh cost them a spot in the top 4. He did not even play in their run of losses and his return saw them win 5 in a row. The team missed the start and their game plan is devoid of backline shape … have not scored a try off a set plan from a scrum in the attacking zone ….it seems all based around Haas who us obviously not fit. It leads to mistakes caused by frustration … bears little resemblance to the style that took them to the gf.
