Receivers move in to sell derelict The Gap site on urban explorer bucket list

A prime 5000 sqm site in Brisbane’s west which has become vacant and vandalised over the past decade has been put up for sale.

New plans for Renzo's Place site in The Gap

A 67-year saga to develop a vandalised property in Brisbane’s west, one of the top sites in the city for urban explorers, could soon be over.

Receivers McGrathNicol put the sprawling 5000 sqm property in The Gap up for sale late last year via an expressions of interest campaign which closed on December 18.

It is understood there are a number of interested buyers for “Renzo’s Place’’, which has been vacant and has fallen into disrepair over the past decade.

McGrathNicol was approached for comment.

Ray White Commercial said it was inappropriate for them to comment as the property was subject to receivership.

Pioneering developer Renzo Zanuttini, who built the first high-rise on the Sunshine Coast, bought the land at 836-842 Waterworks Rd and 22A Barkala St in 1958.

Since then there have been two recent attempts to redevelop the site, initially for a six-level unit project mooted in 2017 and again in late 2023 when a healthcare, childcare and retirement unit hub was proposed.

The 2023 plans, submitted by K2M Investments No. 2 Pty Ltd, were approved by council in June last year however there has been no activity at the site since then.

Mr Zanuttini was a local identity known for the immaculate garden he nurtured on the land, next to a BP service station and The Gap Handyman Centre which moved its hardware section to Samford in 2022.
