Freezing temperatures and frost are forecast for Queensland as a pool of cold air directly impacts Australia’s southern states and sweeps north.
Roma on the Western Downs is forecast to fall to 0C on Friday morning while Oakey just west of Toowoomba could get to 1C.
Parts of the Granite Belt will fall to 3C by the end of this week with daytime maximums not expected to climb above 18C. Frost is forecast for Stanthorpe and Glen Aplin.
Meanwhile, Brisbane minimums later this week will hover around 10C while it will get down to 6C in Ipswich on Friday morning.
The Bureau of Meteorology’s Angus Hines said the freezing temperatures and frost were due to a weak cold front driving up from the southern ocean.
“It will cross Tasmania today and Victoria overnight tonight … into Wednesday it’s going to move northwards to New South Wales and into Queensland slowly,” he said.
“Sometimes cold fronts bring a lot of rain and thunderstorms. This one is not doing that just a few showers for the far east coast, but it is bringing in a big pool of cold air.
“Those cold conditions will get drawn up across the eastern states, and then once that cold front leaves on Thursday, the cold air will stick around for another couple of days.
“Following in behind that, we anticipate some relatively clear nights, especially Wednesday night into Thursday. A clear night is almost always colder than a cloudy night, so with the cold air and the clear night, it’s that combination there which is going to lead to those chilly, frosty mornings.
“Anywhere that’s got a minimum temperature forecast of under 4C as an air temperature could potentially get a little bit of frost on the ground.”
It comes after Gladstone recorded its coldest May day in nearly 50 years on Friday, with the daytime maximum only getting to 16C – nearly 10C below the May average.
Miles, Kingaroy, Warwick and Biloela also recorded their coldest May day in five years.
