More than 100,000 Queenslanders have become victims of crime under the new state government, but fresh data shows rates have fallen.
It comes after Premier David Crisafulli vowed to resign if victim rates went up during his tenure, after introducing landmark new “adult crime, adult time” laws.
The Courier-Mail has obtained Queensland Police Service data which shows the rate and number of reported victims of crime has declined since the change of government in late October.
The month-by-month data shows 31,505 reported victims were recorded in October compared with 28,130 in February.
Of those February victims, 6787 were victims of an offence against them, while 21,343 victims were from offences against property.
Between November and February - the government’s tenure so far - 119,720 victims of crime were recorded from both offences against a person and property.
The rate of reported victims for offences against a person has also declined, from 1.36 victims per 1000 people in October to 1.18 victims per 1000 people in February.
Victims of property offences fell from 4.26 to 3.72 people per 1000 in the same period.
Despite the decline, Mr Crisafulli said there was still work to do.
“Am I pleased about some of the green shoots, of course. But there’s a long way to go,” he said.
“Everything is about fewer victims, and treating victims with the respect they deserve and making sure there’s fewer of them.
“If you’re asking me whether I’m satisfied, I am far from satisfied. It’s the first step in a journey towards turning things around.”
During last year’s election campaign, Mr Crisafulli promised to not seek a second term in 2028 if victim numbers increased under his government.
“It’s victim numbers, it’s not number of unique offences and what happens on a Wednesday,” he said on October 7.
“If there aren’t fewer victims, you won’t be seeing me.”
But on the eve of the election, Mr Crisafulli walked back on the pledge and confirmed the commitment would instead be tied to population growth.
The data shows victim rates have fluctuated since October but were on a downward trend.
QPS states a victim of a property offence is the location of the offence, for example a specific business or home.
