Qld budget reply: Opposition leader Steven Miles takes aim at Premier

Opposition leader Steven Miles says Labor has launched a website to track all the government’s broken promises, using his budget reply speech to take aim at the “slippery” Premier’s ego.

Food charities would get $10m to improve refrigeration and distribution services to send tonnes more food to vulnerable people and children under if Labor is elected in 2028.

Opposition Leader Steven Miles made the announcement – his first after Labor was booted from power in October – during a budget reply speech that attacked Premier David Crisafulli’s “ego” and the lack cost of living support.

In the hour-long speech Mr Miles argued the government had broken “almost every promise” and revealed the opposition had launched a website to track them.

He repeatedly criticised the government for changing the colour of Queensland’s coat of arms from maroon to blue and accused the LNP of copying Labor policies.

Mr Miles claimed Mr Crisafulli was “too slick for his own good, untrustworthy and slippery”.

“Instead of focusing on his re-election campaign in 2028 I call on the Premier to focus on the now, here today, when people are struggling to pay the rent or turn the lights on,” he said.

“Focus less on the ego of rebranding our state, on your political team colours, and more on how to practically do what matters.

“This is the budget of a government that cares only about itself and its longevity.”

Mr Miles said Labor would recommit to reduce land tax by 50 per cent for build to rent developments that include at least 10 per cent affordable rental homes for 20 years.

“This week the New South Wales Government extended the same tax concession indefinitely,” he said.

“At the next election a Labor government will also extend that tax cut indefinitely. That’s how we will match New South Wales, not through stealing their colour.”

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said Mr Miles’s reply contained “no new initiatives, no new funding, a secret plan for taxes”.

He said Mr Miles did not publicly axe his state-owned service stations or $1.4bn free lunches for school students policies announced during the election.

“It isn’t what he said in his budget seat, it’s what he didn’t say,” Mr Bleijie said.

On Mr Miles’ claim the state would pay “billions more” that the $7.1bn funding envelope for the Olympic Games, Mr Bleijie said “you’re just making stuff up, mate”.
