A man is fighting for life in hospital after being pulled from the ocean at a popular Sunshine Coast beach.

The man in his 40s suffered significant head injuries while in the water and was briefly submerged at Alexandra Headlands on Sunday.

Lifeguards pulled him from the water and administered first aid until emergency services arrived at 11:17am.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the man sustained potentially life threatening injuries and was transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Emergency services rushed back to the same location at 12:30 to treat a teenage girl who was also pulled from the water by lifeguards after finding herself in trouble.

She was assessed as being in a stable condition.
