The parents of a baby who made a dramatic entrance in the car park of the Deception Bay police station have thanked the quick-thinking officers who helped bring their son safely into the world.
Queensland Police Service constables Jacob Pennisi and Philippe Stigner were returning to the station after attending morning callouts when, at about 9.20am on March 1, they were flagged down by Nathaniel Pedler from across the car park.
Nathaniel’s wife Julie, who was in the late stages of labour, was about to give birth.
With the pair unlikely to make it to hospital in time, constables Pennisi and Stigner jumped into action.
Constable Stigner quickly dialled Triple-0 and with the help of the call operator, baby Blake was born less than five minutes later.
Julie and Nathaniel recently returned to the Deception Bay police station to thank the officers who helped bring their son safely into the world.
Julie thanked the police for their calm support and said she had been caught off-guard by the speed of her labour.
“It was all very quick on the day. It was nice to have the help of the police,” the mum of two said.
Reflecting on the day, constable Pennisi said he had felt an immediate sense of relief when he heard the baby’s first cries.
“The call operator asked us to get a towel to wrap up the baby and to keep both mum and baby warm,” he said.
“We found a towel in the back of the car, wrapped the baby up and the paramedics came about five minutes later.
“It all happened very fast. We definitely didn’t expect to be involved with a birth that day, but that’s the thing about this job - every day is different, every call out is unique.”
